I received a card from my roommate when I graduated from the interior design program and typically I read cards and toss them but this one I decided to frame. The quote on the front spoke to me. "Life isn't about finding yourself. Life is about creating yourself." -George Bernard Shaw. I began to think more in depth about this quote while reading Chapter 5 from the text as well as Possessions and the Extended Self. While some say they need time to find themselves, I think they aren't really looking for who they are but trying to figure out how to react to a certain situation. Thinking about all the things that make up one's extended self, and then losing one of those things can change that persons personality, appearance, and outlook on life. I think the reason I like the quote so much is that it reminds me that although I may feel lost at times, I'm still me and my decisions, actions etc. reflect me at that time. I have grown and changed myself from when I was in high school and I hope I continue to grow and change through my future life experiences.

ReplyDeleteI really like your comment, especially your quote from the card. I feel so many people try find themselves( especially through objects and materialistic things), yet, they do not realize it's not about molding into what you think is how you are supposed to act or appear, it's about taking action to what feels comfortable and what betters yourself. So many people think there is this defined definition of "finding yourself", yet we continue to grow more each day. I often struggle with the fact, Life is so short. I try and better myself each day and quite honestly, we know who we are. It is not a matter of finding it's a matter of embracing our true potential. Although I may argue, that some may lose themselves along the way. As have I, had darker pasts yet I have used those experiences to understand where I went wrong and improve myself. I have grown so much from high school as well and find it funny the things you find important then (your car, your clothes, your make up). Now I wear, drive, and my make up is what is practical, comfortable, and makes me feel confident.( Yet, I still find myself trying to seek this optimum perfection(Caused by pressure from media))Constant battle, many of us face. Great Quote and must have been a great roommate!
